MESA, Ariz., Dec. 16 (UPI) -- Gunfire met Arizona police trying to serve a search warrant early Thursday, leaving two Maricopa County sheriff's deputies and the alleged gunman injured.

Two deputies were wounded as they attempted to serve the warrant near Mesa, Ariz., in a murder investigation in Pinal County, the Arizona Republic reported.

As deputies broke in the door, shots struck one in the abdomen and the other in the hand. Deputies returned fire, striking the alleged gunman in the head. The newspaper said the gunman was not the suspect in the murder investigation.

The injured were taken to hospital for treatment.
