Alleged thief jumps 80 feet to flee

HONOLULU, Nov. 30 (UPI) -- A man accused of stealing a vendor's receipts during a football game at Honolulu's Aloha Stadium survived an 80 foot fall over the stadium wall.

The 21-year-old thief allegedly grabbed the vendor's money in the remaining two minutes of the University of Hawaii's game against Northwestern University Saturday.

A bystander tried to grab the suspect and the two struggled, but the suspect broke free and fled the concourse, KITV-TV, Honolulu, reported Tuesday.

"The gentleman jumped up on the railing as if he were going to sit on it and then he put one foot over, the other foot over, (then) he dropped down and just jumped," said Aloha Stadium spokesman Patrick Leonard.

Leonard said it was dark and raining and the suspect may not have realized how high up he was.

The suspect, whose name has not been made public, had been drinking, police said. He was hospitalized in guarded condition.
