Senators push SEC on whistleblower protection

WASHINGTON, Nov. 15 (UPI) -- Two senators are urging U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman William Donaldson to vigorously enforce corporate whistle-blowers laws.

Sens. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, and Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., sent Donaldson a letter last week regarding the Sarbanes-Oxley corporate accountability law, asking what steps the agency is taking to investigate companies accused of retaliating against employees who reveal corporate wrongdoings.

The Department of Labor has oversight of the whistle-blower protections in the law, but the ranking members on the Senate Finance Committee asked Donaldson to tell them what investigations, if any, have been undertaken under the auspices of the expanded powers provided under the new law.

In addition, they want to know if the efforts are being coordinated with Labor.
