Hinckley's ex pivotal to more liberty

WASHINGTON, Nov. 9 (UPI) -- U.S. prosecutors worried at a Washington hearing that John Hinckley's obsession with an ex-girlfriend would make him dangerous if given more freedom.

Hinkley, 49, is seeking more liberty from St. Elizabeths Hospital in Washington, where he has been held since being found not guilty by reason of insanity in the 1981 shootings of President Ronald Reagan and three others.

Prosecutors said Hinckley may have been deceptive about his ongoing interest in Leslie deVeau, who was also confined at the hospital after she was found not guilty by reason of insanity in the 1982 killing of her 10-year-old daughter. She and Hinckley had a romantic relationship until she was released in 1990 and broke off the romance several years later, hospital officials said.

Prosecutors said the public should worry about Hinckley's continued desire for a romantic relationship with deVeau because he long ago admitted he shot Reagan as part of his obsessive interest in actress Jodie Foster.

However, psychiatrist Robert Keisling, who interviewed deVeau and Hinckley last week, testified both want to maintain their long-standing friendship even though Hinckley said he regrets their breakup, the Washington Post reported.
