Stewart keeping busy in prison

NEW YORK, Oct. 15 (UPI) -- Martha Stewart posted a letter to fans on her Web site Friday, assuring them that she is adjusting to life in a federal prison in West Virginia.

She said that the minimum security prison in Alderson is "like an old-fashioned college campus -- without the freedom of course."

"I have adjusted and am very busy," Stewart said.

Stewart asked her fans to stop including gifts or money in letters they send her. Under prison rules, all gifts must be returned, and inmates, no matter how much money they have in their commissary accounts, can spend only $290 a month. She suggested that those who wish make donations to their favorite charities instead.

The woman who built a catering business into a media empire voluntarily entered prison last week, saying that she wanted to serve her five-month sentence and put it behind her. She was convicted earlier this year of obstructing a federal investigation into alleged insider trading involving a stock sale that was later found to be legal.
