National Front denies racist label

WELLINGTON, New Zealand, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- The president of New Zealand's National Front says a picture of him with men performing a Nazi salute does not mean his organization is fascist.

Kyle Chapman also said he did not know the men were doing the salute, the Dominion Post reported Wednesday. His group disputes claims it is a racist-fascist organization.

Chapman was photographed at the group's militia meeting in April with a group of saluting men, one of whom wore a swastika armband. Chapman said the men had just arrived and he did not know what they were doing.

Participants in a pro-multiculturalism march set for Oct. 23 in Wellington are expected to confront the National Front's rally on the same day, the newspaper said.

Chapman insists his organization is simply right-wing and sometimes attracts the wrong kind of people.
