No terror link seen in Ariz. license scam

PHOENIX, Sept. 24 (UPI) -- Federal agents found no indication terrorists obtained false Arizona driver's licenses from Motor Vehicle Department workers accused of selling licenses.

State and federal agents Thursday charged 26 MVD employees with creating large numbers of driver's licenses that were issued to illegal immigrants and drug dealers in exchange for bribes of up to $3,500.

The Arizona Republic said Friday while no evidence was found that terrorists were involved, the U.S. attorney in Phoenix conceded the licenses could be used to board airliners and purchase firearms.

The workers arrested were members of unrelated groups of employees at 10 MVD locations statewide and had been the target of undercover operations that began as long as three years ago.

Eight other individuals were also charged in the alleged scams.
