Jordan slams Bush comment on Arafat

AMMAN, Jordan, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- Jordan Wednesday criticized U.S. President George Bush's call to the international community to boycott Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.

Government spokeswoman Asma Khoder told UPI Jordan "rejects such call and reaffirms its previous position that considers Yasser Arafat as the legitimately elected president of the Palestinian people."

Bush said in his address to the U.N. General Assembly Tuesday the international community should end all contacts with Arafat.

Khoder reiterated Jordan's support for the so-called "road map" for peace in the Middle East as the basis for settling the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and called for ironing out obstacles, such as the construction of Israel's security barrier, that obstruct the resumption of peace talks.
