CBS sets panel to probe '60 Minutes' story

NEW YORK, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- CBS News has named a former Republican U.S. attorney general and a retired news executive to look into its reporting on President Bush's military service.

In a statement Wednesday, CBS News said it had appointed Richard Thornburgh and Louis D. Boccardi to investigate the circumstances of last week's "60 Minutes" report on Bush's service in the Texas Air National Guard. The report, presented by veteran CBS newsman Dan Rather, used documents which the network subsequently said could not be authenticated.

Thornburgh headed the Justice Department when Bush's father, George H.W. Bush, was president. He also served as governor of Pennsylvania.

Boccardi formerly served as president of the Associated Press.

"The two-person review panel will commence its work this week and will have full access and complete cooperation from CBS News and CBS, as well as all of the resources necessary to complete the task," the network said in a statement. "The panel will report its findings to CBS News and CBS. The findings also will be made public."

Rather has apologized to viewers for the mistake. CBS News also apologized, promising to conduct an investigation into how the mistake was made.
