British poll favors Kerry in U.S. vote

LONDON, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- More than half of British citizens hope to see Democratic Sen. John Kerry win the U.S. presidential election, a poll published Wednesday indicates.

The Massachusetts senator had 52 percent support for election, while incumbent President George Bush scored only 29 percent in the Populus poll, conducted for The Times of London.

Populus polled 1,009 adults Sept. 3-5 and found nearly half of supporters from both Labor and Conservative parties prefer Kerry.

Among men, 35 percent favored Bush and 49 percent Kerry, while 16 percent were undecided.

Among women, 23 percent favored Bush, 56 percent Kerry, and 21 percent were undecided.

The poll has quite different results than recent U.S. polls, which indicate Bush is enjoying as much as an 11 percent lead over Kerry following last week's Republican convention in New York.
