Gandhi slams Israel's security measures

GAZA, Aug. 26 (UPI) -- Aaron Gandhi, the grandson of India's Mahatma Gandhi, Thursday slammed Israel's security measures in the West Bank and Gaza.

Gandhi, who is visiting the Palestinian territories and Israel, chairs a delegation representing an American organization called Nonviolence and Peace.

He told reporters in Jerusalem Israeli security measures are worse than what the former apartheid regime in South Africa imposed.

Gandhi examined the security barrier Israel is constructing in the West Bank and also toured the old city in Jerusalem.

Gandhi criticized Israeli checkpoints erected in the West Bank in and around Jerusalem.

"A city like Jerusalem must be all open, so everyone could reach it and visit it," Gandhi said, adding, "It must be respected by everyone."

Gandhi is scheduled to meet with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat in Ramallah as well as other Palestinian officials.
