Death toll in Wyoming pileup rises to 3

CHEYENNE, Wyo., Aug. 20 (UPI) -- The death toll in a multi-vehicle pileup in Wyoming was raised to three Friday as highway crews raced to reopen the state's main east-west freeway.

The Wyoming Department of Transportation said eastbound Interstate 80 between Cheyenne and Laramie would be reopened following a complete repaving of a section of the roadway that was damaged by fire in Thursday's 33-vehicle crash.

Fog and wet pavement were blamed for the chain-reaction crash that left 34 people injured and sparked a fire that melted a 100-foot long section of the interstate east of Laramie.

Transportation officials said 125 tons of asphalt was laid overnight to fix the damaged roadway.

The names of the victims were not immediately released.
