JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- The South African political party that created and sustained apartheid is merging with its former enemy, the African National Congress.
Following the end of apartheid, a policy that prevented blacks and whites from mixing, the national party changed its name to the "New National Party" and reinvented itself as a mixed-raced party, the Voice of America reported Monday.
However, since former South African President F.W. de Klerk stepped down as the New National Party's leader two years ago, it has struggled.
The ANC hailed the New National Party's move.
"It takes a very, very bold person to take a position that I will move forward and join the party of the people that I've been trying to oppress all the years," said Smuts Ngonyama.
