Chicago, Atlanta vie for busiest airport

CHICAGO, July 16 (UPI) -- The winner of the title world's busiest airport depends on how you look at it: Chicago's O'Hare has more flights, Atlanta's Hartsfield more passengers.

The Federal Aviation Administration says O'Hare International handled 490,987 takeoffs and landings from January through June, Hartsfield had 481,390 flights during the same six months and Dallas-Ft. Worth International had 408,114 flight operations in the first half of the year.

At O'Hare, only 60 percent of the arriving flights and 65 percent of departing flights were on time because of increased congestion that prompted United and American Airlines to cut back the number of prime-time flights in March, the Chicago Tribune said.

Hartsfield handled 12 million originating passengers from January through April, O'Hare was second with 9.4 million and Dallas-Ft. Worth was third with 8.1 million passengers.

The Transportation Department's Bureau of Transportation Statistics projects Hartsfield will handle more passengers than any airport in the world in 2004.
