Senate panel approves Indian gaming limits

WASHINGTON, July 14 (UPI) -- A U.S. Senate panel approved a bill Wednesday designed to discouraging states from relying on Indian gaming revenues by limiting the funds they can collect.

The Senate Indians Affairs Committee passed the measure, which limits the revenue states can collect from Indian casinos, thereby discouraging states from forcing tribes into revenue sharing arrangements.

Under the bill, such agreements would only be allowed when tribes earn enough from such operations to have excess funds after tribal government expenses and related programs are funded.

The measure would allow states to tax tribal gaming proceeds if they provide economic benefits to the groups.
