Richardson praises Edwards as VP nominee

SANTA FE, N.M., July 6 (UPI) -- New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson Tuesday praised Sen. John Kerry's choice of John Edwards as his running mate on the Democratic presidential ticket.

"Senator Edwards is a strong vice presidential candidate," the governor said. "He deserves the vice presidential nod because of his hard work and his strong appeal to working families. He'll bring tremendous excitement and energy to the ticket."

Richardson was mentioned often as a potential Kerry running mate until last week when he removed himself from the speculation. The popular Hispanic governor told Kerry in a letter that he was committed to serving out his term as governor.

Richardson will be chairman of the Democratic National Convention in Boston later this month. The former congressman was U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and energy secretary during the Clinton administration.
