Students hooked on sordid Web sites

TOKYO, June 9 (UPI) -- A survey of Japanese students showed an alarming number seeking out adult and violent content on the Internet, as well as visiting shopping and chat sites.

The survey also found that half of the elementary school children questioned were surfing the Web without adult supervision, said the Mainichi Shimbun Wednesday.

The survey was conducted by Digital Arts, a software developer, and included 103 children aged 10 to 17. It found that nearly 80 percent visited shopping sites, used bulletin boards and accessed chat sites.

About one-fourth of those interviewed frequented adult sites and 15 percent said they visited Web sites with violent content.

In a recent shocking incident, an 11-year old schoolgirl killed her classmate with a knife at school after the victim posted comments about her on the Internet. The killer was found to have book marked Web sites dedicated to violence and horror. None of her family members were aware of this fact.
