Dallas manager announces retirement

DALLAS, May 26 (UPI) -- Dallas City Manager Ted Benavides Wednesday announced his retirement after nearly six years running the nation's eighth largest city.

Benavides, who has clashed with Mayor Laura Miller in recent years, passed his retirement letter to the City Council during Wednesday's regular meeting, The Dallas Morning News reported.

Benavides, who was hired in 1998 by former Mayor Ron Kirk, said he will step down from the top job Nov. 19.

"I am grateful for the many people who have given me the chance to grow and contribute here," Benavides said in a statement.

Miller clashed with Benavides on several issues, including his failure to disclose pay raises approved during a wage freeze and the hiring of Terrell Bolton as police chief. Bolton was fired last year.

Dallas is one of the largest cities in the United States with a city manager form of government. The council hires and fires the city manager who drafts the city budget and supervises all the city's agencies.
