French evacuate Paris airport terminal

PARIS, May 24 (UPI) -- French officials evacuated Paris' Charles De Gaulle airport Monday after cracking noises were heard in the terminal's roof, Sky News reported.

The evacuation comes just one day after part of the terminal collapsed, killing four people.

The noises in the concourse, closed since Sunday's collapse but still occupied by police and investigators, were similar to noises heard just before the previous day's tragic collapse.

"We're taking no risks," a spokesman said of the evacuation.

The head of the airport authority said the entire building may have to come down if the design proves faulty.

Judicial and technical inquiries have been launched, with an expected focus on possible faults in the design of the ultra-modern building or possible short-cuts taken in its construction.

Trade unions warned a year ago that ADP and Air France, the terminal's main users, were rushing the completion of the building because of commercial concerns, the Times of London reported.

Its architect, Paul Andreu, cut short his work on a new national theater in Beijing to help with the airport investigation.

The accident happened in a newly built departure lounge at the international airport.
