Spain's ex-PM: expects election attacks

ORANGE, Calif., May 16 (UPI) -- The former prime minister of Spain has warned the United States to be prepared for terrorist actions aimed at affecting the fall's presidential election.

"It's important to realize that the terrorists will do all they can to disrupt the upcoming U.S. election," said Jose Maria Aznar, as he received Chapman University's Global Citizen medal in Organ, Calif., Saturday. "They are going to do everything in their power to have the United States fail."

The Canadian Broadcast Corp. reported Sunday the former prime minister defended his support of the Iraq war as a means to defeat terrorism. "I did what I had to do," he said.

"The results of the elections in Spain would have been different if not for what happened on March 11," Aznar said.

Aznar lost his bid for re-election several days after terrorists placed bombs on trains in Madrid March 11.

He is scheduled to meet Thursday with President George W. Bush.
