Beijing says SARS under control

BEIJING, May 10 (UPI) -- Chinese health officials in Beijing Monday said they have stopped the spread of the SARS virus since it broke out last month.

All but one of the seven people confirmed or suspected of contracting severe acute respiratory syndrome in Beijing since April 21 are now off breathing machine support, which health officials said is a good sign of recovery, the Kyodo news service reported Monday.

The Beijing health bureau called a news conference to answer repeated calls from foreign news media representatives to discuss the recent outbreak of the deadly disease that infected 2,251 people in Beijing last year and killed 191.

Liang said 18 government departments are working to control the outbreak, including maintaining quarantines when needed and operating body temperature checks at all public places.
