Terror still a major threat to Americans

WASHINGTON, April 30 (UPI) -- Terrorist groups will continue to threaten U.S. citizens and interests across the world despite a decrease in terror attacks last year, says an official warning.

The U.S. State Department's worldwide caution warned Americans to brace themselves for possible terror attacks.

The department's annual report on terrorism had said earlier that terrorist attacks last year, 190, were the lowest since 1969. A total of 307 people were killed in these attacks.

The worldwide caution, issued after the report, said the Department of State was deeply concerned about the heightened threat of terrorist attacks against U.S. citizens and interests abroad.

"U.S. citizens are reminded to maintain a high level of vigilance and to take appropriate steps to increase their security awareness," the warning said.

"Future al-Qaida attacks could possibly involve non-conventional weapons such as chemical or biological agents as well as conventional weapons of terror. We also cannot rule out that al-Qaida will attempt a catastrophic attack within the U.S."
