U.S. seeks closer G7 ties with China

WASHINGTON, April 25 (UPI) -- The United States wants closer ties between China and the Group of Seven nations, the Financial Times of London reported.

"China clearly is playing a larger and larger role in the global economy, and its continued progress is important to us and it is to the rest of the G7," John Snow, U.S. Treasury secretary, following the weekend G7 meeting in Washington.

The Financial Times Sunday quoted a Treasurey official as saying: "China is a critically important player in the global economy and, yes, I think some role for them participating in the meetings at some point in the future will clearly have a useful role. I don't want to get ahead of the rest of the G7, and it's their decision. But we are clearly trying to embrace them more and find ways to strengthen the dialogue with them."

The G7 meeting was held in conjunction with the spring gatherings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank in Washington.
