Mueller: FBI needs more analysts

WASHINGTON, April 14 (UPI) -- FBI Director Robert Mueller told the Sept. 11 commission the FBI should develop a new track for domestic intelligence analysts.

"We want those people, we want them within the bureau and we want to give them the stature that has not always been there," Mueller said.

The Sept. 11 commission's staff statement hinted at that lack of status, saying young FBI intelligence analysts have spent their time emptying trash cans and answering phones.

Mueller said he wants to create an analyst track to allow agents to move up the ranks without ever having to carry the badge and gun of an FBI law-enforcement officer.

That change will come with a change of FBI focus away from simply using the intelligence it gathers to create watertight criminal cases and more to using its intelligence to predict and disrupt terrorist plots, Mueller said.
