WREXHAM, England, March 30 (UPI) -- Sharon and Peter Robinson-Hudson of Wrexham, England, said Tuesday they suffered a deep loss after being cheated trying to buy a baby over the Internet.
The couple paid about $2,700 Moira Greenslade, who had advertised her services as a surrogate mother on an Internet site in 2003. Six months before the baby was due, she canceled the agreement, the BBC reported Tuesday.
"We are the victims of a cruel deception," said Sharon Robinson-Hudson. "We are totally devastated by the torment we have been put through. We feel like we have suffered a bereavement."
Greenslade admitted Monday to promising the baby to three couples. She was charged with obtaining about $4,500 by deception and three charges of breaking adoption laws. The other two couples promised to pay her each up to $15,000 for the baby.
The baby girl is currently under the care of social services. Greenslade faces 10 years in prison if convicted.
