Afghan warlord's son buried in Herat

HERAT, Afghanistan, March 23 (UPI) -- The Tuesday burial service in Herat for slain Afghan Aviation Minister Mirwais Sadiq was peaceful, and attended by thousands of mourners, the BBC reported.

Sadiq was killed Sunday in a confrontation with a militia commander challenging the regional authority of Sadiq's father, Gov. Ismail Khan.

His death sparked sudden and vicious clashes in the western city that left as many as 100 dead.

The BBC said Khan's private army appears to have put down any resistance, and the area is relatively calm. There was no sign Tuesday of some 1,000 government troops reportedly dispatched to the city.

The militia commander in Sunday's incident, Zahir Nayebzada, was appointed by the government of President Hamid Karzai as part of its efforts to unify and stabilize the fractious country.

The report said Karzai has virtually no influence in the province, where Khan has dominated since the end of Taliban rule in late 2001.
