'Israel in secret ties with Sudan, Libya'

TEL AVIV, Israel, March 10 (UPI) -- Israel is holding indirect contacts with Sudan and Libya, the army's radio station reported Wednesday.

An American Jew, whom it did not name, met Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir in Khartoum about a month ago and delivered a message from Israel saying Jerusalem seeks contacts that would lead to diplomatic relations.

Sudan's ambassador to the United States expressed readiness for an indirect dialogue with Israel when he met Jewish representatives, the radio added.

Recently a senior Libyan intelligence official met Jewish representatives in Italy and similar meetings were held elsewhere in Europe and the United States, the radio added.

Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom told Israel Radio following the war in Iraq, Libya's readiness to dismantle its weapons of mass destruction and Iran's readiness to allow atomic energy experts inspect its facilities there is more Arab openness toward Israel.

"Contacts are much more frequent, those that were published and those that were not published yet," he said.
