Kerry hits Bush in special interests ad

WASHINGTON, Feb. 16 (UPI) -- Sen. John Kerry has launched a new e-mail ad accusing President Bush of being in the pocket of special interests.

Kerry campaign officials said the ad was a response to Bush campaign claims that the Massachusetts senator was in the pocket of special interests. The e-mail ad will initially be sent to 300,000 people, but campaign officials said they hoped eventually ti would reach 5 million.

The ad accuses the president of having taken $1.4 million from drug companies and pushed through a $140 billion "giveaway" for the pharmaceutical industry.

Citing Center for Public Integrity figures, the ad says bankrupt energy giant Enron during 1999-2000 "gave $1,328,290 in total to Bush and the GOP" and that it was "Bush's largest career patron."

"Bush has taken more special interest lobbying money this year than Kerry has his whole life," the ad alleged.
