Edwards biggest last-minute spender in Wi.

WASHINGTON, Feb. 16 (UPI) -- Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C., has spent more on television spots than any other Democrat in the 10 days prior to Tuesday's Wisconsin primary.

Edwards, who is banking on a strong finish to cement his position as a viable alternative to front-running Sen. John F. Kerry, D-Mass., has spent $269,645 on TV ads compared to $242,270 for Kerry and $207,390 for former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reported.

"The amount of money spent in Wisconsin pales in comparison," University of Wisconsin Professor Ken Goldstein says, to what the Democrats spent "in the last week before the Iowa caucuses."

Goldstein said the amount spent by Dean is substantially less that what the former front-runner told supporters he would spend. "It looks like this race is going to end under the yellow caution flag."

Wisconsin voters are expected to cast 1.6 million votes Tuesday, far exceeding the primary and caucus turnout thus far. The latest polls show Kerry leading the field by a substantial margin.
