Malaysia's PM appoints Najib as his deputy

SINGAPORE, Malaysia, Jan. 7 (UPI) -- Malaysia Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi Wednesday appointed veteran politician Najib Tun Razak as his deputy leader after months of speculations.

The move was being seen as a sign Abdullah is preparing to call a general election, BBC News reported.

Najib, 50, is the son of Malaysia's second prime minister and has spent most of his working life in politics.

The deputy's post is seen as a stepping-stone to the top job and many will now expect Najib, previously a defence minister, to succeed Abdullah when he eventually stands down.
