Liberal group's Hitler ads draw RNC's ire

WASHINGTON, Jan. 5 (UPI) -- The Republican National Committee has asked the nine Democrats running for president to disavow ads comparing U.S. President George Bush to Adolf Hitler.

The ads were posted on the Web site of MoveOn.org, an ultra-liberal political group originally formed to fight the impeachment of President Bill Clinton.

In a statement issued Monday, Republican National Committee Chairman Ed Gillespie condemned MoveOn.org for the ads, part of a group being considered for use in a $7-million media campaign.

"Such ads are anything but appropriate for television," Gillespie said, "and MoveOn.org should apologize for posting the ads, as the Simon Wiesenthal Center today asked them to.

"Further, every Democrat seeking his or her party's nomination and who stands to benefit politically from MoveOn.org's efforts to defeat President Bush in November though millions of dollars in advertising should support the Simon Wiesenthal Center's request and urge MoveOn.org to apologize for posting these ads on their Web site and deeming them appropriate for television," the Republican chairman continued.

The ads suggest parallels between Bush administration policy in the Middle East and the war-making activities of Hitler's Nazi regime.
