8 charged in college hazing incident

DALLAS, Dec. 8 (UPI) -- Dallas police Monday filed charges against eight suspects in an apparent hazing incident that critically injured a Southern Methodist University student.

Braylan Curry, 21, was admitted to a Dallas hospital in critical condition after consuming an excessive amount of water Nov. 15, according to police. He was in a coma for part of his 11-day hospitalization before making a full recovery.

Curry suffered from pulmonary edema, a condition where water enters the lungs, and hyponatremia, a sodium imbalance brought on by excess fluid, doctors told The Dallas Morning News.

Charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon were filed with the Dallas County District Attorney's Office. If convicted, the suspects could face from 2 to 20 years in jail and a fine not to exceed $10,000.

Curry, a pledge in the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, apparently engaged in a water-drinking competition at an off-campus apartment, according to police.

The national Alpha Phi Alpha organization has suspended its SMU chapter pending the outcome of an investigation.
