Congo pressures foreign militias

KINSHASA, Democratic Republic of Congo, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- Foreign militias will no longer be tolerated in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a spokesman for the president warned Friday.

President Joseph Kabila's spokesman said elements of the former Rwandan army and former Rwandan Hutu militias who fled their country after the 1994 Rwandan genocide would be disarmed and returned, the U.N.'s Integrated Regional Information Networks reported.

"The president of the republic can no longer accept that these people, who are not Congolese soldiers, remain in the Congo. They must be disarmed and returned to their country," the spokesman said.

The comments follow complaints from Rwanda that the militias use Congo as a base to attack Rwanda.

"The situation needs urgent attention and the Congo government must show more commitment to resolving this problem," Charles Muligande, the Rwandan foreign minister, said.
