Arnold turns down Davis debate challenge

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 26 (UPI) -- Arnold Schwarzenegger will apparently not take Gov. Gray Davis up on his invitation to a one-on-one debate before the Oct. 7 recall election.

Davis had said this week he was ready to square off with Schwarzenegger in a discussion of the issues in the campaign, but a strategist for the actor's campaign told UPI Friday they preferred to enter the home stretch with a full schedule of public appearances.

With only 11 days to go until the vote, Schwarzenegger picked up two more endorsements Friday from Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., and from the state's county GOP chairmen.

The county endorsement doesn't automatically commit scores of volunteers to working for Schwarzenegger, but party officials said many would be out this weekend to knock on doors and personally encourage voters to go to the polls next month.
