BOMBAY, Sept. 12 (UPI) -- Bombay police said Friday they shot to death a man suspected of masterminding twin bomb blasts Aug. 25 that killed 52 and injured more than 150.

"Two persons were shot dead by the police. One of them was Nasir, the mastermind behind the bomb blasts," the city's police commissioner said, giving no other name for the bomb suspect and not identifying the second.

Police told the BBC the two men were killed in one of a suburb of Bombay, known locally as Mumbai, and gave no further details.

But the Times of India reported the two died in a standoff near Ruparel College in suburban Matunga after refusing to surrender and firing at police.

"It is a big achievement for Mumbai police," Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal said of Nasir's killing.

Four people were arrested in the case earlier.
