Poindexter to resign from Pentagon

WASHINGTON, July 31 (UPI) -- Retired Rear Admiral John Poindexter is resigning his Pentagon post for proposing what amounted to a gambling system based on terrorist attacks.

Under the plan, people who successfully predicted times and places for terrorist attacks would win money from other players.

The New York Times said Thursday it learned Poindexter, who served as President Ronald Reagan's national security advisor, will resign "in the next few weeks."

The newspaper said it learned Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld did not ask Poindexter to step down, but agreed the time had come for him to leave.

"It's fair to say that the secretary understood what Admiral Poindexter understands, which is that it's difficult for any work that he might be associated with to receive a dispassionate hearing," said a Pentagon official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
