Maryland nurse suspected in patient deaths

ROCKVILLE, Md., July 17 (UPI) -- The Maryland Board of Nursing has suspended the license of a nurse suspected in patient deaths at the Rockville's Shady Grove Adventist Hospital.

The Baltimore Sun said no charges have yet been filed against Coleen Thompson of Rockville, who was assigned to the hospital's 26-bed adult intensive care unit.

Hospital President Deborah Yancer told a news conference: "As a nurse, as a human being, I am very angry that someone would violate the trust of this community ... that a nurse may have taken unilateral action to hasten the death of a critically ill patient ..."

The incident involved a 63-year-old woman suffering from respiratory failure, streptococcal pneumonia, chest pain, abnormally low blood pressure and septic shock.

Hospital officials said when the patient's blood pressure became dangerously low, Thompson failed to take appropriate action.

But police officials said Thompson's actions were far more serious than simply failing to act and they're also investigating the deaths of other patients under Thompson's care.
