Ex-Guantanamo prisoner to file law suit

GUANTANAMO BAY, Cuba, July 10 (UPI) -- A Pakistani man who was imprisoned at Guantanamo Bay for 10 months without charges says he will sue the U.S. government for $10 million.

Mohammed Sagheer, 51, was released last November.

During an interview with the BBC, his lawyer, Mohammed Ikram Chaudhry, said he believes his client's mental health has been affected by his captivity.

Chaudhry said he arrived at the $10 million figure because of "mental, physical and moral suffering" Sagheer had undergone.

Sagheer says he was kept in solitary confinement and was served alcohol-laced drinks -- contrary to his religion.

Sagheer was on a preaching mission in northern Afghanistan when he was arrested. Under American authority he says he was deprived of food, forbidden to pray and made to shave his beard.

At Guantanamo Bay he said he faced relentless questioning about Osama bin Laden and al-Qaida.
