Abbas reasserts stand against terrorism

GAZA, West Bank, June 13 (UPI) -- Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas reportedly had assured President Bush he is committed to reduce terrorism.

Abbas spoke to Bush Thursday by telephone, saying he was committed to continuing negotiations with all militant factions to achieve a cease fire, Ha'aretz reported.

Prime Minister Ariel Sharon sparked a small war of words Thursday, saying Israel must assist Abbas in fighting terrorism "until he grows feathers." That raised the anger of Abbas's aides, who called Sharon "an ignorant farmer who does not understand politics."

An American delegation headed by special envoy to the Middle East John Wolf is due to head for Jerusalem Saturday in an effort to prevent further deterioration of the situation between Israel and the Palestinians.

Meanwhile, U.S. government officials Thursday rejected calls to dispatch international forces to impose security and peace between Israel and the Palestinians.
