Mawae is entering his ninth NFL season and fifth with the Jets. He has been the starting center for the AFC in the last three Pro Bowls.

The 6-4, 289-pound Mawae was a second-round draft choice of the Seattle Seahawks in 1994 and has played in 126 regular-season games, starting 123. He has been New York's best lineman and has helped running back Curtis Martin post four straight 1,000-yard seasons.

The Jets, who are expected to have one of the best offenses in the AFC this season, signed Martin to a contract extension on Aug. 29. The following day wide receiver Wayne Chrebet, who like Mawae was eligible to become an unrestricted free agent after the 2002 season, signed a seven-year contract.
