Thousands mourn Cantor Fitzgerald

NEW YORK, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- More than 2,500 people mourned in a memorial service in Central Park in New York City Monday the 700 members of the securities firm Cantor Fitzgerald L.P. lost in the attack on the World Trade Center.

The firm's chief executive and president, Howard Lutnick, whose own brother has been listed as missing in the attack, said many asked how he can continue.

"I have received so many hugs and kisses from everybody here," Lutnick said. "Without those hugs, there's no chance that I could have gone on."

Cantor Fitzgerald International and its sister company eSpeed International had operations on the 101, 103, 104 and 105 floors of the World Trade Center. Approximately one thousand people were employed by the two companies and the only survivors were people out of the office on Sept. 11. The companies have an office in London as well.

The memorial service for family and friends of lost Cantor Fitzgerald, eSpeed, and TradeSpark employees was held in a tent in Rumsey Field in Central Park in Manhattan on a cold and rainy day, that reflected the mood of those gathered. A "Remembrance Wall" with notes to those believed deceased was created from the friends and family members.

A memorial service in London for friends and colleagues, from Cantor, eSpeed, TradeSpark and C02e.com, who lost their lives will be held at St. Paul's Cathedral on Saturday, Oct. 6.

No other firm that operated in the World Center lost as many employees as did the companies of Cantor Fitzgerald. A support group headed by a mental health professional has been formed for the friends and families of employees missing or lost in the attack.

Many loved ones received cell telephone calls from Cantor FItzgerald employees after the airliner hit the Twin Tower. Since the fire from the plane crash was on floors below them, many from the firm attempted to reach the roof thinking helicopters would rescue them.

The helicopters never came. One person called a relative from a cell phone and said the roof door was locked and when the group tried to return to the company floors they found the doors locked, trapping them in the stairwell.

"Many of those lost were men in their 30s and 40s with families. One widow said that not only had she lost her husband but all her friends as well since they were with the company.

New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani participated in the service and spoke on how 'heroes" died that terrible Tuesday.

"There are many different kinds of heroism, and one of them is the quiet heroism of working hard, supporting a family and pursuing a dream," the mayor said. "Our economy and our society are built on millions of men and women who engage in this kind of heroism day in and day out."

The company, which lost 75 percent of its employees, has decided to continue in business. It closed Monday so that employees and clients can honor colleagues missing or departed.

"We will never forget the tremendous contributions made by our departed loved ones, friends and colleagues," said Phil Marber, president of institutional equities. "It's imperative that we take time out and honor those who were taken far too soon."

Cantor Fitzgerald, L.P. is a financial services firm and is a leading financial intermediary in both the equity and fixed income markets. Cantor has expanded its business to include portfolio trading, investment banking, financial spread betting, market advisory, energy brokerage, CO2 emissions trading and electronic trading technology.

eSpeed provides the marketplace infrastructure for 48 financial and non-financial instruments, including most of the world's fixed income marketplaces. It transacted over $200 billion of financial instruments daily.
