Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton undergoes successful shoulder surgery

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton underwent surgery to repair a partially torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder on Thursday.

Newton won't be cleared to throw a football for at least 12 weeks and will be unable to throw during team drills for at least 16 weeks, according to the rehabilitation plan disclosed by the Panthers.

The surgery was performed by Dr. Pat Connor at the Carolinas Medical Center.

"Dr. Connor was pleased with the results of the surgery and Cam is at home resting," Panthers trainer Ryan Vermillion said on the team's website. "He will begin his rehab program Monday."

Newton injured the shoulder in a contest against San Diego in Dec. 11. Initial tests didn't discover a serious injury but Newton continued to experience issues and, eventually, an MRI exam revealed the partial tear.

The Panthers are hoping the 2015 NFL MVP will be ready for training camp in late July.

Coach Ron Rivera also hopes Newton rediscovers his form. Newton passed for 3,509 yards, 19 touchdowns and 14 interceptions during last season's 6-10 campaign after producing 3,837 yards, 35 touchdowns and 10 interceptions during his stellar MVP season in which Carolina reached the Super Bowl.

"He's going to have to rebuild his confidence. I mean, he was shook. Let's be honest. I'm not going to lie about that," Rivera told reporters at this week's NFL annual meetings in Phoenix. "The young man went through a tough time and we went through a tough time."

Derek Anderson is Carolina's backup quarterback.
