If Kirk Cousins had his way, he would be the starting quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers next season.

Cousins' preferred destination is San Francisco according to ESPN, largely because of his desire to play for former Washington Redskins offensive coordinator and new 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan.

However, the Redskins are expected to apply the franchise tag on Cousins for the second straight season before Wednesday's deadline. But until Cousins signs his franchise tag, he is allowed to talk to other teams.

Washington could give Cousins permission to speak to other teams after signing the franchise tag in order to work out a trade, per ESPN.

The former fourth-round pick (102nd overall) of the Redskins in the 2012 NFL Draft has spent his first five seasons with the team.

Cousins, 28, threw for a career-best 4,917 yards and 25 touchdowns against a career-low 12 interceptions in 2016. Washington (8-7-1) missed the playoffs last season after finishing third in the NFC East.
