Longtime standout Keenan McCardell is returning to the Jacksonville Jaguars to coach the team's wide receivers.

McCardell spent six of his 17 seasons with the Jaguars (1996-2001) and ranks second on the franchise's all-time list in receptions (499), yards (6,393) and touchdowns (30).

"We all understand what Keenan means to this organization and we are excited to welcome him home to Jacksonville, as he'll oversee the growth and consistent improvement of our receiving corps," said recently hired Jaguars executive vice president of football operations Tom Coughlin, who was the team's head coach during McCardell's tenure in Jacksonville.

"When Keenan served as a coaching intern with the Giants in 2009, I knew then that he would have a future in this industry," Coughlin added. "His 17 years of playing experience will prove very beneficial to the young group of receivers and we are grateful to have him on our staff."

McCardell's most recent job was wide receivers coach at the University of Maryland (2014-15). He also spent two seasons as a receivers coach with the Washington Redskins in 2010-11.

During his stint with the Jaguars, McCardell formed one of the league's top receiving tandems with Jimmy Smith -- the duo earning the nickname "Thunder and Lightning."

McCardell appeared in 209 career games with five teams and amassed 883 career receptions for 11,373 yards and 63 touchdowns. His 883 receptions rank 13th all-time in NFL history, while his 11,373 yards is 23rd on the career list.
