Eliot Wolf passes on San Francisco 49ers, staying in Green Bay

Director of football operations Eliot Wolf withdrew from consideration for the San Francisco 49ers general manager position and signed a contract extension to return for a 14th season with the Green Bay Packers.

Wolf, 34 and the son of Hall of Fame general manager Ron Wolf, started his scouting career with the Packers in 2003.

San Francisco began another round of interviews last week after deciding on Atlanta Falcons head coach Kyle Shanahan as head coach. Shanahan cannot officially be hired until Atlanta's season is over. The Falcons play Sunday in the NFC Championship game.

Coach Chip Kelly and general manager Trent Baalke were fired at the end of the 2016 season. The 49ers own the No. 2 pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.

While Wolf is out of the picture in San Francisco, Packers director of player personnel Brian Gutekunst and Minnesota Vikings assistant general manager George Paton remain top candidates.

A front-office move is not expected until the candidates can meet with Shanahan.

Should the Falcons beat the Packers on Sunday, Shanahan can interview for a second time with the 49ers, and the GM candidates are permitted to be present.
