Andrew Luck makes additions to book club

INDIANAPOLIS, July 28 (UPI) -- Not even Harvard grad Ryan Fitzpatrick has a book club with as much recognition as Andrew Luck's book club.

Luck, a Stanford graduate in his own right, added two new selections to the Andrew Luck Book Club on Wednesday. The Indianapolis Colts quarterback chose 'The Martian' and 'The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe.'

Luck explained the idea for the book club on the club's website.

"The idea was initially planted during an interview I did in February 2015 with the hilarious guys over at NBC Sports Network's Men in Blazers who started in on me about my love of reading. Check out the interview and you'll see what I mean," Luck wrote.

An article followed, several months later, by Kevin Clark in The Wall Street Journal. Clark called Luck the NFL's "unofficial librarian." During that time, the hashtag "#ALBookClub started to trend.

"We knew we were on to something fun," Luck said.

Starting in April, Luck began introducing a book for "rookies," or younger people, and a book for "veterans," or older people. The club uses social media to track readers' journeys through the books and post thoughts, comments, and questions. He also plans to post Q&A sessions. Luck planned to release the book selections in stages corresponding with the NFL schedule: off-season, mini-camp, summer training, and pre-season. He will bring in guest athletes to take over for him until after the Super Bowl.

There is no sign-up or login for the book club. Interested readers just need to follow the club on social channels and use the hashtag #ALBookClub.

Luck, 26, completed 162-of-293 passes for 1,881 yards, 15 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions in just seven games last season. In 2014 he broke out for 40 touchdowns and 4,761 passing yards. He signed a six-year, $140 million contract this offseason to become the highest-paid player in NFL history.
