Victor Martinez will miss the Detroit Tigers' weekend series against the visiting Texas Rangers to be with his wife for the birth of their fourth child, manager Brad Ausmus said Thursday.

Martinez will be placed on the paternity list following Thursday afternoon's game against the Baltimore Orioles.

The Tigers are expected to reach out to Triple-A Toledo to fill the roster spot of Martinez, who entered Thursday's game batting .265 with two homers and 21 RBIs this season. The 38-year-old Venezuelan is hitting .300 in his career with 229 homers and 1,098 RBIs in 1,769 games with the Cleveland Indians, Boston Red Sox and Tigers.

Catcher/first baseman John Hicks is a possible candidate, as the 27-year-old filled in admirably when Miguel Cabrera was on the 10-day disabled list with a right groin injury last month. Hicks batted .423 with one homer and seven RBIs in seven games with the Tigers from April 22-30.
