Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander finished second in the American League Cy Young race to former teammate Rick Porcello in the second closest vote in history, losing 137-132.

Verlander finished with more first-place votes (14-8) than the Boston Red Sox ace, but Porcello had more second place votes (18-2).

Two voters in Florida left Verlander off their ballot entirely, sending Verlander's fiancee, Kate Upton, into a tizzy.

Upton went on a colorful and obscene tweet rant saying: Hey @MLB I thought I was the only one who got to (bleep) @JustinVerlander?! What 2 writers did not have him on their ballot?

She continued: He had the majority of 1st place votes and 2 writers didn't have him on their ballots?!! Can you pick more out of touch people to vote?@MLB

For his part, Verlander didn't seem too upset. He tweeted: Just want to say thank you to all the @officialBBWAA who voted for me.

The two reporters who left Verlander off their ballots were Bill Chastain, who covers the Rays for MLB.com, and Fred Goodall, who covers baseball in the Tampa area for the Associated Press.

"I feel bad that people are upset about this; I did the best I could," Chastain told the New York Daily News. "I went around the clubhouse, I asked guys. I agonized over this. The biggest thing for me was between (Baltimore closer Zach) Britton and Porcello."

Verlander faced the Rays one time this season -- allowing two runs (one earned) over seven innings in a 3-2 Tigers win on July 2.
