The Miami Dolphins placed defensive end Dion Jordan on the reserve/non-football injury list on Tuesday.

The move means Jordan must miss the first six weeks of the NFL season. Jordan is recovering from knee surgery.

Miami also placed second-year linebacker Zach Vigil on the same list. He has a back injury.

Jordan recently returned to the Dolphins after missing the entire 2015 season for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. He was reinstated by the league on July 29 and it was then that Miami learned he had injured the knee during a private workout.

Jordan was third overall pick in the 2013 NFL draft by the Dolphins and hasn't met expectations. He had just 37 tackles and three sacks in his first two seasons before sitting out last year.

Jordan was had suspended indefinitely without pay in April 2015 following multiple violations of the NFL-NFLPA Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse. He has been suspended three times during his NFL career.

He was conditionally reinstated by the NFL in late July, and commissioner Roger Goodell said Jordan could attend training camp if he makes arrangements for treatment and complies with the terms of his reinstatement.

Jordan hasn't played in an NFL game since December 2014.

"It was tough," Jordan said recently. "All of it was tough, I feel, being away from the game the whole year. But I knew I wanted to come back and I wanted to prove to myself first and foremost, and other people in this organization that I can be a big factor once I get out here. So I just put my mind to it. I trained real hard and I'm here."

The Dolphins traded two draft picks to the Oakland Raiders to move up and draft Jordan in 2013 after he had a standout college career at Oregon.

Vigil had 11 tackles and one blocked punt while playing in all 16 games for the Dolphins last season.
