The Philadelphia Eagles placed running back Ryan Mathews on the non-football injury list with an ankle injury suffered last week, the team announced Wednesday.

The injury is not considered to be serious, according to a Philadelphia Inquirer report.

Mathews is a prime candidate to be the Eagles' top running back this season after DeMarco Murray was traded in the offseason.

Injuries have plagued Mathews' NFL career. He played 16 games in a season only one time in his six-year pro career. In 2015, Mathews played in 13 games, including six starts, and rushed for 539 yards while averaging 5.0 yards per carry.

The Eagles also signed rookie wide receiver David Watford, who was a quarterback at Hampton and participated in the team's rookie mini-camp on a tryout basis.
